This beautiful old-fashion quilt was made by one of our talented clients.
This is what she had to say about it:
My mother has a dear friend in Louisa, Kentucky who had a cedar chest filled with original feedsacks from the 30’s and 40’s that belonged to her mother and grandmother. She was in need of the space and so decided to get rid of these little gems. My mother and I split the lot and could not have felt more blessed to have the opportunity to create something beautiful using the fabric. I couldn’t wait to work on my first project. I knew immediately there was a quilt in there somewhere for my son and his soon to be wife.
First things first, I had to say a big “Thank You” to Rosemary for her sacrifice. I cut one strip of fabric from every sack and made her a table runner so she would always have a little piece of the feedsacks with her. I then was on the search for a pattern worthy of these treasures. My son was getting married just a couple months after receiving the fabric and wanted to make something very special for their gift. I went through every quilt book, magazine, web site I could find and finally stumbled upon an old advertisement for a quilt pattern for a 1930’s quilt. I knew immediately it was exactly what I was looking for.
I designed a block using the format from the picture and modified it to the block size I thought would work. The most difficult part was trying to choose the fabrics to use. I really didn’t want to start cutting until I was absolutely sure of colors and layout of each square, after all, I was working with fabric that I could never replace. Just a little intimidating!!
Anyways, it all came together beautifully and the happy couple truly cherished their heirloom quilt. I feel very fortunate to have found Julie [at J & P Quilters] to do the quilting because it was exactly what the quilt needed! She did a great job and was very helpful with choosing pattern and thread color.
